welcome back because clearly i never shut up and this project has officially taken over my brain in the best way possible. today’s blog is about character arc planning but like… not the boring kind where it’s “beginning middle end” and that’s it. this is the emotional stuff. the why. the feelings. the things you don’t really notice at first but that make the whole video feel heavy in your chest.

so here’s what i’m gonna talk about (kind of, i’ll probably go off track):

my character (the doll, the girl, the reflection)༄ؘ ۪۪۫۫ ▹▫◃ ۪۪۫۫ ༄ؘ

so my character’s name, at least for now, is Caroline. i don’t even know why the name feels right, it just does. it sounds soft and pretty and kind of empty at the same time. like a name that looks nice written down but doesn’t actually say much about who the person is. which is exactly the point.༄ؘ ۪۪۫۫ ▹▫◃ ۪۪۫۫ ༄ؘ

༄ؘ ۪۪۫۫ ▹▫◃ ۪۪۫۫ ༄ؘthe name comes from Paradise Kiss (obviously) and i’ve always loved how yukari is called caroline in the modeling world. it feels fake in a sad way. like she becomes someone else just to survive. and that idea really stuck with me.

in the actual short film we probably won’t even say her name. she’s kind of just… there. existing. but for me, i need to know who she is in my head so i can direct her properly. so yeah. caroline.༄ؘ ۪۪۫۫ ▹▫◃ ۪۪۫۫ ༄ؘ

༄ؘ ۪۪۫۫ ▹▫◃ ۪۪۫۫ ༄ؘshe’s american because that just makes things easier story-wise. her birthday is october 25, 2009, which is literally a mix of my birthday and angely’s. i did that on purpose. she’s not me and she’s not angely but she’s made of pieces of both of us.

she loves pink. dolls. lace. soft things. not because she’s childish, but because softness is the only thing that makes her feel safe. she surrounds herself with cute things to distract herself from how empty everything else feels. it’s like if she keeps everything pretty, maybe nothing bad will happen.༄ؘ ۪۪۫۫ ▹▫◃ ۪۪۫۫ ༄ؘ

she’s lonely. like actually lonely. her parents aren’t really present, and when they are, they’re fighting. there’s no stability. no comfort. no one checking in. she grows up feeling invisible, like she has to entertain herself, calm herself, raise herself. and that messes you up in ways you don’t even realize ༄ؘ ۪۪۫۫ ▹▫◃ ۪۪۫۫ ༄ؘuntil it’s too late.

she takes pills to stay numb. not because she wants attention, not because she’s “crazy,” but because she’s tired. she doesn’t want to feel everything all the time. she wants quiet in her head.༄ؘ ۪۪۫۫ ▹▫◃ ۪۪۫۫ ༄ؘ

a lot of this comes from family. her mom isn’t mentally okay either, and that instability just passes down. nobody teaches her how to cope, so she just copies what she sees. it becomes ༄ؘ ۪۪۫۫ ▹▫◃ ۪۪۫۫ ༄ؘnormal.

she deals with anxiety, paranoia, these moments where everything suddenly feels too real, too loud, too much. she refuses to see herself as dark or depressed. she clings to pink. to dolls. to being “fine.”༄ؘ ۪۪۫۫ ▹▫◃ ۪۪۫۫ ༄ؘ

but by the end, she can’t keep it up. the pink fades. she wears black. the doll cracks. we don’t explicitly show what happens, ༄ؘ ۪۪۫۫ ▹▫◃ ۪۪۫۫ ༄ؘbut it’s implied. you feel it. that’s enough.

also, one small detail i love: she has dark hair but has always wanted to be blonde. she admires blonde girls quietly. she wants to be lighter, brighter. but her hair is “too pretty to ruin,” so she never changes it. which feels very her. wanting change but being stuck.༄ؘ ۪۪۫۫ ▹▫◃ ۪۪۫۫ ༄ؘ

now let’s talk about angely💙 because genuinely none of this would work without her.⋇⋆✦⋆⋇

her name is angely gomez mesa and she’s been in the US for four years. i’ve been here for three. we understand each other in that immigrant way without even having to explain things.

⋇⋆✦⋆⋇she loves slow music, the kind that feels emotional but comforting. she’s a singer and plays piano, guitar, electric guitar, and flute, which is honestly insane and unfair. her colors are dark red, black, dark blue. she loves modeling and acting. she’s expressive in a quiet, powerful way.

she’s not like me. she won’t talk to everyone. she won’t be loud for no reason. but she notices everything. she feels deeply. and that’s exactly what i need for this role.

we were friends online for about a year before actually hanging out. now we’re inseparable. we go everywhere together. sleepovers, random plans, long talks. i know her family, her family knows me. her dog hates me (still hurts but i’ll survive).⋇⋆✦⋆⋇

we’re both cuban, went to the same middle school, and just clicked. she loves reading, movies, and expressing herself through art. she’s an ESOL student, so tests are hard even though she understands everything, and that makes me admire her so much because she never gives up.

⋇⋆✦⋆⋇i picked her as my actress because i trust her. because she understands emotion. because she’ll respect the project. because she’ll bring something real. and yes, because she’s beautiful and that matters visually too. i’m being honest.

i used a bit of ai, and i wanna be clear about that. i don’t love ai for generating people or full videos. it freaks me out. but i like it as a tool. for grammar. for school. for small edits when you already know what you’re doing. as long as it doesn’t replace creativity.

me and angely are complete opposites aesthetically. i’m blonde, pink-obsessed, loud. she’s dark, calm, mysterious. even our music taste is different. seeing my aesthetic on her is one of the most exciting parts of this whole project. it feels new. unexpected. a little unsettling in a good way.

Final thoughts because i’ve been talking forever 💭

this blog was honestly so fun to write. this one and the makeup blog are my favorites so far. i love planning, aesthetics, characters, and imagining how everything will come together.

this project feels real now. not just an idea. and that’s scary but exciting.
