Question: What kind of sound design will create tension and emotion in my opening?

welcome to my Blogggggg, For this one, I think I have to get a little poetic and a little more creative than usual, because honestly… music is everything.. ˚◞♡ ⃗ *ೃ༄
Editing matters, acting matters, lighting matters everything matters but the right song? That’s what decides how the whole video feels. Music can literally flip the entire mood in one second.Like, imagine starting with Daddy Yankee, Beyoncรฉ, or Crystal Castles. Same visuals, same acting, same edits completely different emotions. The whole thing could either feel dramatic, chaotic, dreamy, or just totally wrong. So yeah… picking the right song is not just important, it’s crucial . ˚◞♡ ⃗ *ೃ༄for this project to make sense at all.

For this blog, I’m going to include a screenshot from one of my past blogs where I talked about songs I had in mind.
Those were more like ideas floating around, nothing fully decided.

I’m also going to show the three songs that actually made it to the final round the ones I seriously considered and then the one I’m almost sure I’m going to use. Almost sure… because knowing me, I might change my mind later ๐ญ๐ถ

I’ll probably say this a hundred times, but I’m Cuban, so my music taste is very mixed. I don’t really listen to a lot of music from my country, even though I respect it a lot. Most of what I listen to is in English, usually loud, emotional, or atmospheric. I don’t hate mainstream artists like, I don’t mind Bad Bunny but I also don’t go out of my way to listen to what everyone else is listening to. Not trying to be niche or different on purpose, it’s just how my brain works.
*ੈ✩‧₊˚*ੈ✩‧₊˚*ੈ✩‧₊˚*ੈ✩‧₊˚*ੈ✩‧₊˚
Because of that, picking music is already hard for me in general. I really appreciate all music, so choosing just one song for something this important feels almost impossible. That’s why my plan is to stick with one song for now, finish the full edit, and then only at the very end decide if it truly feels right. If it doesn’t, I’ll change it. I’m giving myself permission to do that.

And even though I’m talking a lot about the song itself, that’s not the only important part. The real key elements are:
- the main song
- and the ending silence

For the song, I want something that starts very soft. Low instruments, almost quiet, especially when the title appears. I want the beginning to feel delicate and slightly eerie, like something is about to happen but hasn’t yet. After the title, I’m thinking of letting the lyrics come in, because the words might help push the emotion forward or at least that’s what I’m hoping.

i ALSOOOOO did this spotify playlist on songsss that i mighttt useee๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐all because i really cant stop thinking abt this classsss
The song is going to carry us through most of the video, except during the crashing-out moment. That’s where I want the sound to change. I want it to feel heavier, louder, more intense. I actually chose this song knowing it could be altered and luckily, my best friend (who’s also my actress) is a singer and understands instruments. She can help layer the sound, add more intensity, and make it feel rougher and more aggressive during that moment. More rock, more pressure, more emotion.
Now for the ending… I want silence.
Like real silence.
‧̍̊·̊‧̥°̩̥˚̩̩̥͙°̩̥‧̥·̊‧̍̊ ♡ °̩̥˚̩̩̥͙°̩̥ ·͙*̩̩͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩̥͙·̩̩̥͙*̩̩̥͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩͙‧͙ °̩̥˚̩̩̥͙°̩̥ ♡ ‧̍̊·̊‧̥°̩̥˚̩̩̥͙°̩̥‧̥·̊‧̍̊‧̍̊·̊‧̥°̩̥˚̩̩̥͙°̩̥‧̥·̊‧̍̊ ♡ °̩̥˚̩̩̥͙°̩̥ ·͙*̩̩͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩̥͙·̩̩̥͙*̩̩̥͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩͙‧͙ °̩̥˚̩̩̥͙°̩̥
I don’t know if it’s technically common in movies or anime to remove music when someone is about to die but honestly, I don’t care. I like the feeling of nothing. Just air. Wind. Space. That quiet moment where your brain actually has time to process what just happened.*ੈ✩‧₊˚*ੈ✩‧₊˚*ੈ✩‧₊˚*ੈ✩‧₊˚*ੈ✩‧₊˚
I’ll be honest I think background sound is what ruins a LOT of student films. I had a friend in this class last year who failed, and while his video wasn’t amazing, it wasn’t terrible either. What completely destroyed it was the background noise. People talking, random sounds, gum chewing it killed the mood instantly. No music, no intention, just noise. And that •❅───✧❅✦❅✧───❅•stuck with me.
So if silence doesn’t work because of unwanted background sound, I already have a backup plan. I’ll remove the raw audio and replace it with something subtle like wind blowing, ambient noise, or a “sound of silence” type track. Something barely there. Something that doesn’t distract but still fills the space.
soo this is my second videoblogg,
i hope you enjoy! link below!

Of course, all of this might change once the video is actually in front of me. I’m someone who changes her mind a lot,๐ especially during editing. I can’t fully decide until I see it, hear it, and feel it together. But this is the plan for now, and I feel pretty confident about it.
The volume throughout the video will rise and fall.

It won’t stay flat. That movement is intentional. That’s why the song itself has to be good not just pretty, but flexible. Music controls emotion, pacing, tension, and release. It literally tells the audience how to feel without saying a word.

I also reviewed an article about why music is so important in short films, and I’ll include it below. It really helped me feel validated in how seriously I’m taking this part of the process.‧̍̊·̊‧̥°̩̥˚̩̩̥͙°̩̥‧̥·̊‧̍̊ ♡ °̩̥˚̩̩̥͙°̩̥ ·͙*̩̩͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩̥͙·̩̩̥͙*̩̩̥͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩͙‧͙ °̩̥˚̩̩̥͙°̩̥ ♡ ‧̍̊·̊‧̥°̩̥˚̩̩̥͙°̩̥‧̥·̊‧̍̊

This blog might not be the longest, but I wanted to show how much attention I’m giving to emotional creation through sound. There’s not a lot of fluff here just intention. And yeah, I think you can tell I’m taking this very seriously ๐ญ๐ฌ

Reflection ✧ ˚ · .
Music, to me, is the invisible narrator of this film. Writing this blog made me realize that I’m not just picking a song I’m designing an emotional experience. Every choice, from when the music starts, when it shifts, and when it completely disappears, is meant to guide how the audience feels without telling them what to think.✧ ˚ · .
I also learned that silence can be just as powerful as sound. Sometimes removing music says more than adding it. This process reminded me that my strength isn’t just visual it’s emotional planning. I’m not rushing these decisions, and I think that patience will show in the final result. ✧ ˚ · .
